Pan was pleased with the results of Ms. Bettyâs diabolical plan. He hadnât been sure if it would work, as he knew the residents of the fortress would keep a close eye on her. He was anxious, after receiving her note, to see who sheâd be sending out to him to be the next victims of their cunning and subtle assault on the fortress. When he saw children so young, he knew his task would be made easy.
Ms. Betty had convinced them to leave the safety net of the fortress with the promise of seeing Sim brought back to them.
Pan did not see this story as far-fetched, as they were planning Zaganâs return and believed they could see it through. The fall of the worldâArmageddonâonly cemented their churchâs belief that higher powers were at work, and that they would prevail in the battle for all that remained between God and Satan, with Satanâs help and wicked intervention on their behalf.
Zagan would return, and their powers would increase tenfold.
As soon as Pan led the boys far enough away from the fortress, he tied their hands and feet and blindfolded them to render them helpless. Though they were confused, they did not struggle, for they couldnât. They were too small. Powerless.
Pan thought of his own children when they were as young. He was never able to raise them the way he wanted. And in the end, it didnât matter, because they died. He might never see them again, except on the other side of the spiritual fence.
He placed the boys in a rugged plastic wagon, which he pulled along the road toward Valley Hall. He thought of Ms. Betty remaining at the fortress and all the havoc she might continue to wreak while the orphans wallowed in ignorance of her untrustworthiness.
As he walked along the broken highway and closed the distance to Valley Hall, he delighted in seeing his brethren from afar, heading his way, back from their ritual and forward to the fortress to await their next moves.
When their paths crossed, the parties stopped.
âThe spoils of Ms. Bettyâs wit,â Pan said, while the others relished the capture.
âI never would have dreamed these orphans would fall so easily,â Vash said. âItâs a testimony that Satanâs power is rising.â
âThree of the residents of the fortress left to the heights today,â Pan issued more to Balaam, who had nurtured discussions with the heights on their first day.
âNo worries,â Vash said, still nursing his arm in a sling. âAs I said last time we met, their militia should soon be working in our favor as they flip the script up there. They will have their hands full. Too full to be of any help to the fortress.â
Amon escorted the others away from the wagon and out of earshot of the boys, who were sitting passively inside.
âThese boys are a large prize,â Amon said. âBefore their ultimate sacrifice, we should use them to leverage our position with the other residents.â
âI fully agree,â said Vash. âI canât possibly imagine the lengths the others would go to protect them.
